Who We Are
About Urban Vulnerables
Urban Vulnerables is a community-centered initiative committed to advancing dignity, equity and opportunity among vulnerable people living in urban settings.
We work with women, youth and marginalized groups who are navigating the realities of poverty, violence, unemployment and social exclusion in rapidly changing urban environments. Our work brings together mentorship, psychosocial support, skills development and simple digital innovations that respond directly to the needs expressed by communities themselves.
Guided by values of integrity, compassion, respect, collaboration, confidentiality and “do no harm”, we partner with local actors to co-create solutions that are practical, ethical and sustainable.

What We Do
Programmes
Our programmes are designed to be practical, respectful and grounded in lived experience. Each strand addresses a key dimension of vulnerability in urban life.
Programme 01
Mentorship & Capacity Building
Structured mentorship and training that build life skills, leadership capacity and confidence, enabling participants to navigate daily realities and pursue long-term goals.
Programme 02
Grassroots Technological Innovation
Simple, accessible digital tools that connect communities to information, services and networks, ensuring that technology serves the most vulnerable first.
Programme 03
The Second Chance Initiative
A dedicated space for women and young people who have experienced violence, trauma or systemic exclusion, offering psychosocial support and pathways to self-reliance.
Programme 04
Social Research & Community Insights
Community-based research that documents realities on the ground and informs practice, advocacy and policy aimed at more inclusive urban systems.
Our Approach
How We Work
Our approach is intentionally slow, listening and learning with communities before acting, and ensuring that any intervention strengthens rather than replaces local strengths.
Community Engagement
We begin with conversation. Local leaders, grassroots groups and participants shape priorities, language and methods from the outset.
Human-Centred Design
Programmes are co-designed with the people they serve, honouring lived experience and recognising participants as experts in their own context.
Ethical Digital Innovation
Technology is introduced carefully and ethically, with attention to privacy, access, consent and long-term sustainability.
Evidence & Learning
We continuously document what is working, what is difficult and what needs to change, and share learning with partners and policymakers.
Impact
Emerging Stories of Change
Though many of our initiatives are still young, communities are already reporting important shifts in confidence, connection and opportunity.
- Youth who once felt excluded now participating in mentorship and skills sessions.
- Women who survived violence gaining safe spaces to process, heal and plan.
- Community volunteers using simple digital tools to share information and mobilise support.
- Local data informing discussions with duty bearers on how to serve urban populations more fairly.
